UK 100 called to open +34 points this morning at 6550. Another positive open is expected this morning, as the earlier February rally continues, this is partly driven by the fizzling out of the "Reddit effect" as this group were yesterday nursing heavily losses themselves, a number of shares that they had been backing, came crashing back down. This paired with positive news on vaccine rollouts in the UK and US sees the UK blue chip back to levels before last weeks unusual volatility. On Wall Street yesterday, the Dow Jones closed up 1.57% at 30,687 while the S&P 500 climbed 1.39% to 3,826 and the Nasdaq also rose by 1.56% to 13,612 to complete a stellar days trading Stateside. It was a more mixed picture in Asia overnight, as a private survey showed China’s services sector activity growth slowing sharply in January. Chinese stocks edged marginally lower by the afternoon, with the Shanghai composite down 0.2% while South Korea’s Kospi gained 1.1%. The Nikkei 225 in Japan rose 1% but Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 0.11%
AstraZeneca and Oxford University vaccine showed 76% efficacy against symptomatic infection for three months after a single dose, which increased if the second short is delayed, backing Britain's vaccine rollout policy.
Glencore report that their 2020 output was hit by the Congo mine closure as copper and cobalt production fell. Copper production fell 8% to 1.26m tonnes and cobalt dropped 41% to 27,400 tonnes.
GSK and CureVac are to develop mRNA vaccine to address multiple variants of Covid.
Vodafone report that their total Q3 revenue was down 4.7% YoY to 11.2bn euros. Their organic service revenue returned to growth with a rise of 0.4%, beating analysts' expectations for a fall of 0.1%. They reiterated their guidance for adjusted earnings for the FY of 14.4-14.6bn euros (2020: 14.5bn euros). They also plan to float Vantage Towers (its European mobile phone masts business) in March in a share offering worth around 3bn euros.
