Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open +20 points this morning at 6717.  Calls for a flat open come as traders await unemployment numbers out later this morning.  Yesterday on Wall Street indicies had mixed results, the Dow Jones fell by 37 points or 0.1% to 30,960, the S&P however rose 0.4% and the Nasdaq was th etop performing index one more, adding 0.7% to reach another record close.  The tech-fueled US index was boosted by trader optimism over the start of earnings season for big tech, starting this evening with Microsoft and tomorrow with Apple, Tesla and Facebook.    Asian markets overnight closed in the red, The Hang Seng in Hong Kong led losses among the region’s major markets by falling 2.19%, closely followed by South Korea’s Kospi which dropped 2.14%.  Mainland Chinese stocks were also lower, with the Shanghai composite slipping 1.27% while Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.96%.

AstraZeneca says that their Symbicort Turbuhaler has been approved in China as an anti-inflammatory reliever.

 

Crest Nicholson report FY adjusted pretax profit of £45.9m, around £35-45m ahead of guidance.

 

Greencore report that their revenue is down 15% in Q1 due to UK restrictions and lockdowns.

 

JD Sports confirms they are exploring an equity raise of around £400m.

 

Petropavlovsk reports that their Q4 average realised Gold price was $1,864 per Oz Vs $1,395 YoY. They also state that there has been no material COVID outbreaks so far and that their supply chains are fully functional.

 

Quilter report that their Q4 assets under management are up to £117.8bn from £110.4bn YoY.

 

Rolls-Royce reports that December trading across all its business units were in line with expectations. They have delivered "good progress" on their restructuring programme as they achieved 2020 cost savings of more than £1bn and have a year-end liquidity of £9bn.

 

Saga report a FY underlying pretax profit despite COVID-19 challenges.
