Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open -25 points this morning at 6530.  A negative open is expected today as PM heads to Brussels to try and break Brexit negotiations deadlock.  Yesterday on Wall Street it was a mixed session as stimulus package talks resumed in Congress. The Dow Jones 0.5% to 30,069.79 and the S&P 500 slipped 0.2% but the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.45%.  Asian markets were lower on Tuesday as investors remained cautious over rising coronavirus cases.  The Shanghai composite closed just 0.09% lower and in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index dropped by 0.61%.  Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed lower by 0.30%.

Company News:

 

Ashtead reported a 7% drop in quarterly profit as demand weakened for the tools it provides to the construction and industrial sectors in its biggest market, the USA. Underlying profit for Q2 was £330m (2019: £370m).

 

Ferguson reported that its Q1 profit rose 12.2%, boosted by demand for home improvement in the USA on higher new residential housing permits. Trading profit rose to $486m (2019: $433m).

 

KAZ Minerals have recommended the cash acquisition proposed by Nova Resources to their shareholders.
