Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open -10 points this morning at 5896. Calls for a slightly muted open come as the US election dragged on, with Joe Biden declaring himself confident of  a win and Donald Trump declaring the results a fraud.  Some investors have also looked to lockdown and Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal to trigger nerves.  Overnight Asian markets were mixed in response on Friday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 index up 1.0%, but Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index losing 0.5%.  Yesterday Stateside, the Dow Jones Industrials Average ended 542 points, or 2% higher at 28,390, while the broader S&P 500 index gained 2.0% and the tech-laden Nasdaq Composite jumped 2.6%.

 

Company News:

RSA Insurance is in talks with a consortium of Canadian insurer Intact Financial and Danish insurer Tryg, about a possible break-up deal of the company that values it at around £7.2bn. RSA's board would recommend the offer for 685p share in cash, plus the payment of a previously announced interim dividend of 8p a share.

Beazley says it will slip to an underwriting loss for the year as it set aside $80m to pay out catastrophe claims. it also reiterated its pandemic-related loss estimate. Thier 9- month gross premiums written increased by 16% to $2.5bn ahead of expectations. Have confidence to deliver mid-teens growth next year.

Redrow has entered the new financial year in a position of strength and has been reinforced with strong trading since the start of the year. There has been strong demand for place to live and work.

EasyJet has announced scale-backs of flights due to the current lockdown. It will fly no more than 20% of its capacity. The company have also announced today that they have raised £131m from the sale and leaseback deal of 11 aircraft. They are still continuing to asses further funding options and liquidity. Results are due for Nov 17th, but the airline said on Monday that is not confirmed.

AstraZeneca says Brilinta has been approved in US to reduce risk of stroke in patients with a high-risk transient ischemic attack. This approval was based on positive results from the Thales Phase III trial.

AstraZeneca plans to start early and mid-stage clinical trials of its COVID-19 vaccine in China this year, a senior exec said. Their vaccine is already in final stage trials in other countries, and the company expects data from late-stage trials this year. Upon success, emergency approval will be sought after in as many countries, said Pascal Soriot CEO.
