Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open -15 points this morning at 6030. Calls for a flat to negative open come as investors wait to see, what todays Jackson Hole summit of central bankers brings.  This comes on the back of was another green day stateside yesterday as markets recovered early losses to post gains The Dow Jones added 83.48 points, or 0.3%, to close at 28,331.92. The S&P rose 1.02% to 3,478.73 & the Nasdaq was the strongest performer on the day, gaining 1.7% to end the day at 11,665.06. A continuation of the rally in tech shares saw the S&P 500 and Nasdaq close once more at fresh record highs.

 

Company News:

Diploma says they expect net debt to be around neutral at year end as trading performance and operating profit for FY 2020 is expected to be in line with market expectations. Q3 was impacted by the COVID-19 crisis with revenue down 12% on a reported basis.

 

Flutter Entertainment report that H1 2020 earnings were up 35% on increase in poker and gaming.

 

Hays posted a 12% fall in its annual net fees and said it expected to cut more jobs this quarter by not refilling roles as it adjusts to the slump in hiring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Net fees fell to £996.2m for the FY ended June 30th (2019: £1.13bn).

 

Ocado announce the retirement of their CFO Duncan Tatton-Brown, who will be replaced by Rolls Royce's Stephen Daintith.

 

Rolls Royce announces it aims to sell its Spanish unit ITP Aero and other assets to raise at least £2bn to boost its balance sheet, which has been shattered by a travel slump brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. They sunk to an underlying loss before tax of £3.2bn for H1 2020, as planes stopped flying for months during lockdown and travel still remains at a much lower level, hitting their revenues as airline pay them on the basis of how many hours engines fly.

 

WPP beat dire forecasts for Q2 2020 underlying net sales, declared an interim dividend of 10p and said it was on track for cost saving targets as it sought to weather the COVID pandemic. They reported a 15.1% fall in Q2 2020 underlying net sales, compared with a consensus of down 20%, which was sparked by clients in UK and USA pulling work to save cash.
