Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open +50 points this morning at 6090.  Calls for a positive open come this morning as investors' hopes over financial recovery grew after US President Donald Trump announced a promising new coronavirus treatment.  During trading on Friday the Dow Jones added 190.6 points, or 0.7%, to close at 27,930.33. The S&P 500 rose 0.3% to end the day at 3397.16, yet another closing record. The Nasdaq completed the green sweep by gaining 0.4% to 11,311.80, also a record close.  This gain was on the back of Data from IHS Markit showed U.S. manufacturing activity hit its highest level in 19 months in August, while services were at their highest level in 17 months.

 

Company News:

 

Bunzl has resumed dividends and reported a 16.6% rise in H1 2020 profit, bolstered by robust demand for facemasks, gloves as well as food packaging for the grocery sector. Pretax profit was £306.8m (2019: £264.2m). They also announced deals to buy MCR Safety (a US based personal protection equipment business) and Abco Kovex (a packaging distributor in Ireland).
 
JD Wetherspoon has said it expects to incur an annual loss as its pubs were shut during the coronavirus lockdown and it was looking to discuss waivers for the current fiscal year with its lenders. Sales have received a boost from the government's subsidised meal scheme but were still sharply lower compared with 2019.
