Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open -50 points this morning at 6139.   Calls for a negative open come as the number of new cases of Coronavirus again rose in several different parts of the world.  Concerns saw sentiment weakened and a mixed trading session in Asia, In Japan the Nikkei 225 down 0.58% while in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng rose 0.54%.  Yesterday in the US, The Dow closed 1.5% lower at 25,890 overnight, while the S&P 500 fell 1.08% to 3,145 and the Nasdaq dropped 0.86% to 10,343.  In focus today will be UK’s ‘mini-budget’ later on Wednesday, where the Chancellor Rishi Sunak is expected to unveil a raft of measures designed to help stimulate the British economy out of its pandemic slump.   Brent crude trades at $42.98 a barrel, down 0.23%, while Gold changes hands at $1,794 an ounce, down 0.01%.

AstraZeneca announce their drug Lynparza has been approved in the EU for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

 

Boohoo retailers Next, Zalando and Amazon are delisting products made by Boohoo group following a media report about dire working conditions in an English factory that supplied the popular brand.

 

Boohoo have subsequently announced an independent review of their UK supply chain will take place.

 

FirstGroup flags going concern doubts after posting annual operating loss of £153m (2019: profit £9.8m).
