Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open +60 points at 6205.  Calls for a positive open come as Europe advanced coronavirus bailout arrangements and America further detailed its reopening for more non-essential businesses.  In Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 284 points or 1.22% to 23,016 and the Shanghai Composite dipped 0.19% to 2,831.  At the same time, Japan’s Nikkei gained 395 points or 1.85% to trade at 21,814.  In the US the Dow Jones marked a strong finish to Wednesday’s session at 25,548 – up 553 points or 2.21%.  The S&P 500 added 1.48% to close at 3,036 and the Nasdaq climbed 0.77% to 9,412.  Ol prices fell sharply overnight, seeing Brent crude:  down 5.8% at US$34.07 per barrel, while WTI crude fell to US$31.77 per barrel, a fall of 7.5%.

 

Company News:

 

AstraZeneca is testing one of its diabetes drugs as a treatment for COVID-19.

 

Boohoo announces the acquisition of the remaining 34% of shares in prettylittlething.com for an initial consideration of £269.8m, potentially rising to £323.8m.

 

Cineworld announces that its lenders have agreed to waive its leverage covenant in respect of its credit facility for the June 2020 testing date and has increased its leverage covenant for the December 2020 testing date. They have also agreed terms of $110m of additional liquidity through an increase in its revolving credit facility.

 

Daily Mail & General Trust owner says consumer media revenue was down a third in April as they reported flat revenue and a 20% drop in pretax profit.

 

EasyJet announce they plan to cut up to 30% of its staff (4,500 jobs) and shrink its fleet, to fit the smaller market it expects to emerge from the collapse in air travel due to COVID-19. Proceeds from the cost cuts are expected to raise between £500-650m.

 

Tullow Oil announces that CNOOC Uganda limited has informed both Tullow and Total that it will not pre-empt the sale of Tullow's assets in Uganda to Total.
