Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open -90 points at 5819.  Overnight trading in Asia and yesterdays close in the US saw markets end in the red, this came on the back of Jermone Powell, chair of the federal reserve saying that there is a "growing sense that the recovery may come more slowly than we would like" and that the US economy faces an "extended period" of weak economic growth.  The Nikkei closed 1.74% lower overnight at 19,914, in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng closed 1.5% lower at 23,828 & in China the CSI 300 closed 1% lower at 3,926.  Oil prices recovered from lows overnight to trade at yesterdays midpoint, traders will be looking for an indicative movement as to which way the breakout may come.

 

Company News:

 

Hargreaves Lansdown report that total assets fell 8.1% in the opening four months of the year, hit by sharp equity market falls. Assets under management stood at £96.7bn, down from £105.2bn at the start of January.

 

WH Smith have announced a trading profit before tax of £63m (2019: £65). There was very little impact of COVID-19 in H1 2020 results, however the performance in the second half of the year will be very different.

 

3i Group are to stick to their plan to pay a 2020 dividend after profits slip to a third of last year's figures.
