UK 100 called to open -55 points at 7377; -- U.S. futures fell with Asian stocks and bond yields after Apple said quarterly sales would miss forecasts, illustrating the blow to corporate earnings and economic growth from the coronavirus. Equity benchmarks in Tokyo, Seoul and Hong Kong saw declines of over 1%. Sydney and Shanghai saw more modest drops. The Nikkei closed the day -329 points to trade at 23,193, the Hang Seng saw losses of 391 points to close at 27,564, whilst the Chinese CSI saw a more modest fall of -20 points to settle at 4,057. U.S Markets were closed yesterday for Presidents day, however early indications show the Dow Jones called to open -181 points at 29,287. Crude pulled back slightly from yesterdays levels of $57.7 to trade at $57.3 per barrel. Gold continued to tick higher at time of writing trading at $1587.
Flutter Entertainment confirms that it has received notification from the Australian competition and consumer commission that its proposed combination with The Stars Group inc has been granted formal approval.
Glencore posts its first annual loss in 4 years as impairments bite. They reported a FY19 net loss of $404m (2018: profit of $3.41bn) as they took charges for its Colombian coal, Chad oil fields and African copper and cobalt operations. Core earnings of $11.6bn beat analysts estimates of $11.25bn.
HSBC announce they are to shed $100bn worth of assets and cut 35,000 jobs over three years. Profit before tax came in at $13.35bn, which missed average analysts forecasts of $20.03bn. This was mainly attributable to a goodwill impairment of $7.3bn. They are on track to appoint new group CEO.
Intercontinental Hotels Group reported a slight dip in revenue per room in 2019 (fell 0.3% globally), hurt by a fall in bookings in Hong Kong due to last years protest as it braces for the impact of the coronavirus outbreak. Total Revenue +6.7% and profit before tax +8.2%.
Mondi announce that Andrew King is to be appointed group CEO effective from 1st April 2020.
