Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open -10 points at 7494; Donald Trump and Xi Jinping spoke over the phone and reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the phase-one trade deal, the White House said. Trump also "expressed confidence in China's strength" in fighting the coronavirus. It was a mixed session during trading in Asia, the Nikkei posted a modest decline of 45 points (0.19%) to close at 23,827 having given up early gains, the Hang Seng closed down 143 points (0.52%) at 27,347.  In the U.S we saw all three major indices close the day in the green, the Dow Jones closed up 89 points (0.3%) to trade at 29,379, the S&P closed at 3,345 (+11 points/0.33%) and the Nasdaq closed at record highs of 9,572 (+63 points/0.67%).  Oil dipped slightly below yesterdays level to trade at $55.8 per barrel.  While gold continued to drift lower, trading at $1564 at time of writing.

In corporate news this morning:

 

Bellway sees FY pre-tax profit to be in line with market expectations. Record H1 volume output, with completion of 5,321 new homes (2019: 5,007) +6.3% on previous year. For FY they expect average selling price to be in excess of £285,000. Has a substantial order book comprising of 4,598 homes.

 

Burberry have stated that the outbreak of the coronavirus in China is having a material negative effect on luxury demand, as currently 24 of their 64 stores in China are closed. Their most recent guidance (22 Jan 2020) predates the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

CVS Group states H1 2020 total sales +15% and like-for-like sales +8.4%. They expect to report H1 2020 EBITDA that is materially above that delivered in H1 2019.
