Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open -25 points at 7412; Chinese stocks extended a rebound, as Asian markets joined a rally on Wall Street. U.S. and U.K. equity futures drifted lower as some caution set in after  speculation the impact from the coronavirus will be limited sent the Nasdaq soaring to a fresh record. The Nikkei closed the session at 23,319 (+234 points), whilst the Hang Seng closed at 26,732 (+56 points).  As mentioned U.S stocks rallied yesterday, seeing the Do close at 28,807 (+407 points), the S&P added 48 points to trade at 3,297 & the Nasdaq setting fresh record highs at 9,467 (+194 points).  Oil once again fell below $55 a barrel, to trade half a dollar away from 12 month lows.  Risk on appetite in the markets saw gold giving up $15 from its recent high, to trade at $1561 at time of writing.

In corporate news this morning:

 

Babcock announce that Archie Bethel will retire from his role as Group CEO once a successor has been identified. 

 

Barratt Developments reported a rise in H1 pre-tax profit as they sold more homes at lower prices. They sold the highest number of homes in 12 years and said pre-tax profit was up +3.7% to £423m. 

 

Halma announces that it has acquired Sensit Technologies (USA gas leak detection company) for £39.6m. 

 

Imperial Brands announced that Tobacco trading remains in line with expectations. However, they now expect FY Group net revenue to be at a similar level to last year and adjusted EPS to be slightly lower than last year due to weaker performance in NGP post regulation. 

 

United Utilities announces the retirement of Russ Houlden as CFO. 

 

Vodafone reported Q3 results with organic service revenue growth +0.8% helped by continued recovery in South Africa. However European organic service revenue was -1.4% YoY. Competition in Europe remains challenging, however customer loyalty and growth in broadband has improved. CEO Nick Read said company was moving forward with plan to generate increased value from its network infrastructure, and reiterated its full year guidance.
