Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open -30 points at 7576; Comes on the back of last nights news that airstrike ordered by President Trump, heightening fears of armed conflict in the Middle East having killed a top Iranian general, Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned of "severe retaliation".  The death of Qassem Soleimani comes days after an assault on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the attack was taken without consulting Congress, NBC reported.  U.S futures suggest that last nights record close could be short lived.  The Dow Jones closed at 28,868 (+330 points), the S&P closed at 3,257 (+27 points), and the Nasdaq closed at 9,092 (+119 points).   It was a more muted trading session, the Nikkei closed at 23,656 (-181 points) and the Hang Seng closed at 28,466 (-76 points).  Oil jumped close to $70 a barrel after a U.S. airstrike ordered by President Donald Trump, trading at $69.35 at time of writing.  Gold Spikes as Investors Brace for Iran Response, jumping to the highest level in almost four months, trading at $1541 at time of writing.

 

In corporate news this morning:

 

British American Tobacco welcome FDA guidance as a further step toward a sustainable regulatory environment for the US vapour market. 

 

Bovis Homes announces that it has completed the acquisition of Galliford Try’s Linden homes. 

 

BP & RDSB will react to the news of the US killing a senior Iranian general in an airstrike overnight in Baghdad. 

 

Galliford Try confirm Bill Hocking as chief executive. 

 

Next announce their Q4 results with full price sales +5.2% (+1.1% ahead of internal forecast). FY profit guidance +£2m to £727m. EPS growth of +5.4%. They expect 2020 full price sales to increase by +3%, Group Profit before Tax to increase by £7m and EPS growth of +3.5%. 

Ryanair announce December traffic grows 9% to 11.2m passengers.
