Markets Overview:

UK 100 called to open +40 at 7391 this morning; following on from Fridays rally after the Conservative party’s majority victory in the general election, which saw the pound strengthen and drive the markets higher, it appears this positive sentiment is set to continue today. This paired with the news that a phase one trade deal is enforceable according to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. Trading sessions in Asia were slightly muted overnight, the Nikkei closing at 23,990 (-32 points) & the Hang Seng closing at 27,580 (-107 points). The U.S closed the week striking all time highs across all three major indices before pulling back to a near pared close. The Dow Jones closing at 28,135 (+3 points), The Nasdaq closing at 8,734 (+17 points) and the S&P closing at 3,168 (flat). Crude oil prices held firmly above $65 a barrel to trade at time of writing at $65.4. Gold maintained a level of $1476 per Troy ounce.

 

In corporate news this morning:

 

AstraZeneca has completed an agreement to divest its commercial rights to Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate immediate release) and Seroquel XR (quetiapine fumarate extended release) in Europe and Russia to Cheplapharm Arzneimittel GmbH (Cheplapharm) for $178m. The Company may also receive future sales-contingent payments of up to $61m. 

 

Chemring announced results this morning, stating that overall performance is slightly ahead of initial expectations.  YoY - Revenue +10%; Underlying EBITDA +19%; Underlying operating profit +37%; Underlying profit before tax +53%; Underlying earnings per share +58%; Dividend per share +9%; Net debt -7%

 

Cineworld group have acquired Cineplex for C$34 per share in cash - acquisition unanimously supported by Cineworld's Board of Directors, cineplex are the largest cinema operator in Canada.

 

Kier Group announces the appointment of Matthew Lester as Chairman of its board of directors with effect from 1st Jan 2020. 

Sports Direct reported this morning that their group revenue +14%, group underlying EBITDA +21.8% to £181.2m. Underlying profit before tax +58.1% £101.8m. No change in dividend policy. On track to complete their stated store elevation plan by end of the financial year.
