Markets Overview:

UK 100 called to open flat this morning at 7082.  This comes on the back of a rollercoaster trading session in the US which saw the Dow Jones swing from positive to negative by close.  Stocks in Asia had a more positive trading session, all major bourses closing the day in the green (With the exception of the Hang Seng) could this positive sentiment spill into European trading sessions? US futures are already positive ahead of today's trading. Oil picked back up to the $60 a barrel level overnight. Gold continued to rally through yesterdays US session, seeing the traditional safe haven settle at $1539.

 

In corporate news this morning:

AstraZeneca announced that the FDA has granted Orphan Drug Designation to Fasenra (benralizumab) for the treatment of eosinophilic oesophagitis.

Astra also announced Breztri Aerosphere Phase III ETHOS trial met its primary endpoint in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Anglo American announces their rough diamond sales values for De Beer’s 7th sales cycle of 2019, amounting to $280m. 

Diploma have announced trading has remained in line with expectations, with good underlying growth in life sciences and controls. On track for another good performance in FY 2019. 

Petrofac H1 2019 profit -8.7% because of an ongoing probe into its contract dealings in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Its estimated it has lost out on $10bn worth of contracts globally due to the investigation by Britain's Serious Fraud Office which led to the conviction of its former head of sales on 11 counts of bribery related to Iraqi and Saudi contracts. New orders of $2bn (2018: $3.3bn). 

Thomas Cook has given an update on the implementation of their proposed recapitalisation. Fosun will contribute £450m of new money to the group and will acquire at least 75% of the equity of the group tour operator and 25% of the group airline. Implementation of this commitment is targeted for early October 2019. 

WH Smith announced outcome for year to Aug 31st is to be in line with expectations.
