Markets Overview:

UK 100 called to open flat at 7570; Following last nights interest rate decision in the US to cut interest rates for the first time in 11 years, the UK 100 has pulled back (lower interest rate traditionally means lower dollar value, the majority of the UK 100 report in $) Despite this being widely anticipated as the outcome of the Fed’s decision, this saw U.S markets spiralling down, the Dow Jones giving up more than 300 points! This weakness continued into Asian trading sessions, one piece of solace however was that the $ began to rally through the session, could we see a rebound during today’s trading session? Oil maintained its level, just shy if $65 a barrel as gold retraced $20+ To settle at $1410.

 

In corporate news this morning:

Barclays delivered 1H 2019 results this morning with profits +82% YOY, its best performance for the period in a decade as it reduced costs from fines and litigation while improving investment banking performance. Increase dividend +20% to 3p per share. No fresh PPI provisions. 

British American Tobacco delivered “Strong H1 results” and stated “on track for a good year” Adj Revenue +5.3%; Adj Profit from operations -8.1%; Adj EPS +8.8%; Adj Cash generated from Ops -50.3%; Adj net debt +1.8% 

GlaxoSmithKline & Pfizer have completed transaction to from “world leading consumer healthcare joint venture (GSK have controlling equity of 65%)

Royal Dutch Shell Announced next tranche of share buyback (Value of $9.15bn), also announced second quarter 2019 interim dividend of $0.47 per share (Both A & B Shares)  

Rio Tinto said “We have delivered strong financial results” in their H1 results.  Net cash generated +22%; Capital expenditure +1%; Net Earnings +12%; EPS 19%; Dividend +19% (Announced $3.5bn return of cash to shareholders, including $1bn special dividend)

Standard Chartered released half year results today and have “made good progress on strategic priorities” whilst delivering a 4% growth in income; +13% profits; EPS +9%; 17% increase in interim dividend.
