The UK 100 Index is called to open 32pts higher at 6610pts, pushing higher still after adding 31pts yesterday.
A steady session saw 77 companies advance yesterday on the UK 100 , as traders adopted the strategy 'let the trend be your friend' and made the most of the inevitable Santa rally.
While the gainers were plentiful, if shallow (Admiral ADM.L best performer +2.3%), the losers were few, and some, aggressive. The most notable decliners were companies linked to commodities - metals (industrial and precious) and oil.
Randgold Resources (RRS.L) the day's heaviest faller, down 6.3% at the close, closely followed by peer Fresnillo (FRES.L) down 3.4% as a strengthening dollar impacted the price of gold.
Tullow Oil (TLW.L) slipped by 4% along with BG Group (BG.L) down 1.7% as oil too, fell victim to a firming dollar.
U.S. stocks enjoyed a record breaking session. The Dow Jones (17,959pts) and S&P 500 (2,078pts) closed at record highs, confirming Santa's arrival in Stateside. The S&P 500 has closed at a record high on 50 occasions this year.
Asian stocks fell, with commodity shares dragging the regional index lower for the first time in four days. The dollar traded near a two-week high versus the yen before data on the U.S. economy.
The dollar rose for a fifth day against the yen before U.S. reports that analysts said will show economic growth was revised higher and durable goods orders increased.
Gold advanced from a three-week low as crude oil rallied amid signs of rising physical demand. Platinum climbed from the lowest level since 2009. The metal sank to $1,170 yesterday, the lowest level since Dec. 1. U.S. oil futures for February delivery increased 1.2% today after dropping 3.3% yesterday.
