UK 100 called to open down 6pts at 6629, after the UK Index rallied 1% yesterday to close 65pts higher, inspired by the 185pt Dow Jones advance on Friday.
87 of the UK 100 stocks gained in value on the day as traders moved into stocks that had suffered the most last week.
House builder Persimmon (PSN.L) climbed the most on the day, up 4.52%. Sector peer Barratt Developments (BDEV.L) added 1.92%.
UK 100 airlines also enjoyed a bright session. Shares in International Consolidated Airlines (IAG.L) added 4.45% whilst EasyJet (EZJ.L) shares added 2.44%.
Miners Rio Tinto (RIO.L) and Anglo American (AAL.L) secured 'top 10' positions with gains of 3.61% and 3.32% respectively as traders added riskier stocks to portfolios.
Randgold Resources (RRS.L) was a notable underperformer on the day, shares fell by 0.68% as the price of gold retreated from its highest level on easing geopolitical tensions.
US markets paused for breath after Friday's advance. The Dow Jones posted a modest gain of just 16pts to finish at 16,569pts.
Asian markets followed suit with shallow gains or losses recorded across the board.
In commodities, gold continued to extend declines from three week highs, trading at $1306 as tensions ease in the Middle East and Ukraine sent equity markets higher. WTI fell back to $97.68 a barrel following a three day advance ahead of fuel-supply data being released in the US.
In FX the yen weakened again for the second day against the dollar as demand for the safe haven currency declined.
