UK 100 called to open down 8pts at 6860, after a subdued session on Friday.
The week fizzled out as our American friends enjoyed July 4th celebrations on Friday. The UK 100 managed a gain of less than 1pt! (0.84pts).
The lack of direction was due to fewer participants (U.S. holiday), lower volumes and indecision from traders, now faced with a tough one. Do you buy or sell at these dizzy heights?
We're told to buy low and sell high. Versus historical levels, global indices are high - UK Index within 100pts of a record high, DAX within 50pts, Dow Jones recorded a record high last week and so too the S&P 500 which set its 25th record high THIS YEAR!
If we're to adhere to the old mantra, we should be looking for selling opportunities. That said this year's performance from the S&P 500 supports the argument for buying even if a new record is set.
Shallow gains or losses were seen among the UK 100 constituents. The best and worst performers deviated no more than 2%.
Among the gainers was easyJet (EZJ.L) up 1% as traders moved into the stock that has fallen some 25% in the last three months. Shire (SHP.L) also crept into the blue, up 0.75%, ahead of the weekend, with hopes of a fourth bid from AbbVie - CNBC reports shareholders are holding out for an offer of 5000p.
Sports Direct (SPD.L) notched the biggest loss, down 2%. This nothing more than profit taking after the previous days near 6% rally. Barratt Developments (BDEV.L) and Persimmon (PSN.L) shed 1% after a decent week, traders taking some risk off the table ahead of Taylor Wimpey's (TW..L) first half numbers this morning.
EARNINGS NEWS - Taylor Wimpey said it performed strongly in the first half, with sales rates and pricing at the upper end of its expectations - Reuters.
With the U.S. markets closed, Asian equities endured a flat session. Shanghai closed unchanged, Australia and Hong Kong down 0.1%.
In commodities Gold extended a decline trading at $1313, from a three-month high as the outlook for higher borrowing costs in the U.S. strengthened the dollar. IMF’s Lagarde said yesterday U.S. growth is set to accelerate in the coming months even as she signalled a cut in the bank’s global forecast. Brent Crude hit a three-week low of $110.7 as Libyan exports increased and Iraq’s supplies remained safe.
In FX the dollar rose to a one-week high against the euro as Goldman Sachs brought forward its forecast for higher U.S. interest rates and traders awaited the release of Federal Reserve minutes this week.
